Collins, Greenville : Chart of Milford Haven, from Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, ca.1760. Copper engraved chart. Map size approx 560mm x 440mm. Wide margins, hand coloured, good impression on heavy paper, showing the Welsh coast at Milford Haven. Compass rose, rhumb lines, scale. Cartouche with cherub, dedicated to Sir Hugh Owen. Light water stain to top margin just touching printed area, otherwise a very good, bright and attractive chart.

Corner of back dust jacket states, "BIG TIGER & CHRISTIAN MUHLENWEG CAPE 15s, net. Dust jacket is very worn along top & bottom edges of spine and corners wtih small tears. Edges are worn. Back sisde of dj. is soiled and has water stain marks. Top pages dyed brown, foredge has some soiling, bottom pages are scraped. A couple of marks inside HC. Page crease goes through to page 14. Several page tips creased. 4 over 58 written in pencil other side of flyleaf. Rest of book in VG condition. Ships where available with confirmation.

Signed by Laws.John Keeble in his A Tribute to B G Laws we learn Laws was born on February 6, 1861 in Barnsbury, London and died on September 21, 1931 in London, also composed problems under the noms de plume, Handley Roads (while living on Hanley Road); S. Green (while living at Stroud Green); N.R.S (the final initials of his three names. Benjamin Glover Laws); C. Hill (Crouch Hill); I. S. Lington (Islington); C. Horn (Hornsey). Keeble wrote that, "Mr. Laws started his problematic career in a column edited by F. C. Collins in Brief. . . In the issue of June 7th, 1878, Mr. Laws is announced as having sent four problems to the Chess editor, who acknowledged them, in reply to correspondent, as follows: - "We have much pleasure in inserting your two-move position. Half speckled calf; six spine compartments between gilt rules with red morocco spine label in second compartment reading "Views." Marbled paper over boards. Engraved title page. Caption and running title: Picturesque Illustrations of Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland. This title was issued in parts and this volume apparently contains only the first part. It is bound with parts of "Devonshire Illustrated, in a Series of Views" (Fisher, Son & Co., 1832), consisting of an engraved title page, one unpaginated page, pages 6-8, 13-28, 53-60, 105-108, and 16 leaves of engraved plates (possibly a publisher's dummy?). Each leaf has two views. In Good+ Condition: edges rubbed; front joint just starting to separate from tail of spine; lower corner of front board scraped; foxing.

Bickers and Son, London, 1880. Hardcover (approx 5.75 x 8.75 (15 x 22 cm)), 404 pages. Good+ condition. With twelve illustrations reproduced in exact facsimile from drawings made during the voyages. Blue boards with gold trim (two thin lines) decorative gold inlay along edges. Five raised gilt bands evenly spaced across spine. Decorative gold inlay and book title (on faux gold/brown square) between bands. The boards are bumped, rubbed and scratched. Rubbed, with spotting along spine hinges and board edges. The top corner of the front board is rubbed off, revealing the underlaying board. There is what appears to be moisture/water stain across the bottom of the front board. Marbled pastedowns and free endpapers. Pages foxing/browning. There is a very neat inscription dated July 28, 1882 (the book presented as an award) from a school headmaster to a pupil on the free page opposite the half title page. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

The names of the patronesses are printed: Mrs. Hartman Kuhn, Mrs. Harry McCall, Mrs. Charles Macalater, Jr., Mrs. Francis Peters, Mrs. George Blight, and Mrs. Edward Merrell. With this is a light pink sheet (16 x 12 cm.), folded and printed with the dates (Mon. Jan. 15, Tues. Jan. 30, and Thurs. Feb. 8) and times. The music began at 9:00, the German Cotillion was at 12:00, and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia, also known as "The Assemblies," was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century, the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States.
