New York, New York: Scribner & Co, 1877. First Edition. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Very Good. A single volume of six complete issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, iv + 884 pages, black and white illustrations throughout, 3/4 brown leather over black cloth. A very good, clean, sturdy volume overall; leather rubbed at all edges and fore-corner tips through to boards; binding solid, paper lightly yellowed. It was the common practice of the period for the publisher to reuse the metal in the original printer's plates from individual issues, printing complete volumes for special binding prior to reuse, for libraries and special subscription. These volumes contain all the original editorial content as it first appeared, but without the cover wapper and advertising pages and often represent the first book edition of the written works. This incarnation of "Scribner's Monthly' was sold and renamed 'The Century" in 1882. A new "Scribners monthly' was begun again in 1888.
