About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc., 1955. First edition, as stated. Hardcover. Very Good/good +. This 96-page volume of poetry includes "ballads both Biblical and regional; subtle and deeply individual lyrics, often on the body-and-soul theme; Nature pieces of a rare magic; and those poems which are personal not so much to the poet alone as to the human race in general. . . ." (from front flap of jacket). Among the poems presented here are: In the Corridor; The Betrothed from the Grave; Meg; Astronomics; The Dark and the Light; Encounter; Necessary Light; The Stay-at-Home; Tune on an Old String; Bereavement; The Mandrake; The Haying; At Autumn Things Are All At Odds; As Mary Was Awalking; In Palestine; Easter; The Seven Days of the Week; The Minstrel Who Imagined Song; A Platitude of Plato; To Tatter Town; A simple By the Sea, and many more. The green cloth-covered boards have extremely minor signs of wear. The front free endpaper has a "scar" that looks like tape removal took off a layer of paper in one area (nothing was printed on this endpaper, so no text or publication data affected by this). There is a brownish spot on the top of the outer page block, a tiny spot on the fore edge of the pages (deckle edges) and the pages are slightly age toned. The jacket is a little age-toned and has some edgewear including a few smalll closed tears and one tiny chip, and there is a small brownish-red spot on the back cover. LIght soiling to dust jacket.
