First English edition. Henry Colburn. London. 1828. 8vo. Title, xii, 428pp. Full marbled paper covered boards, 19th Century pseudo tree calf papier croisé pattern. Red spine label with gilt lettering and edge rules. Blue endpapers. Title page slightly toned. Lacking half-title. Rubbing to spine edges. A crisp copy of the rarer London first edition.
In making a Papier Croisé, the final step required that the paper be lifted up and carefully moved while still wet. This caused the characteristic knotting in the design.

Visiting the Sandwich Islands, Cape of Good Hope, the Prince Edward Islands off South Africa, the Kerguelen Islands, Tasmania, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Tahiti, and then Hawaii. Description:
[Missouri][Politics] Autograph Letter Signed. St Louis, Easter Sunday, April 7, 1844. From R. C. Cabeen to his Cousin Mr. J. W. Cabeen in Bluff Post office, Merced County, Illinois. One sheet folded into four leaves. Self-folded to stamp-less envelope. Very good. Legible writing.
Mentions the children have had the measles, and the Spring business season has not yet occurred. At the end a short discussion of wheat prices and crops. Most of the letter is a long discussion of Missouri politics, the election and Henry Clay, etc. In the 1844 election Henry Clay was the Whig candidate and James Polk was the Democratic candidate. A faction of the Democratic Party were known as the Loco Focos and the Whigs charged that Van Buren was a Loco Foco radical. Clay was referred to as "Ol Coon Clay," so that "coon" was a reference to Whigs. These terms are used in the letter:
"It is with joy that I tell you of the devilish licking the locos got here last Monday. The poor devils I pitied them. The City has been under… Read More

Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing.
