About This Item
Portland, 1914. Good.. 329,[1]pp. Original printed boards. Hinges lightly worn and soiled, corners and covers rubbed. Front hinge tender, front endpapers removed. Light soiling and wear to contents, scattered manuscript notations in pencil. Manuscript recipes laid in, with several written on the blank leaves at the end. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Compiled under the auspices of the Portland section of the Council of Jewish Women, a foreword notes that the first edition "was issued in December, 1912, and exhausted within ten months. So great has been the demand from all parts of the United States, that the Council decided to issue a second edition in 1914." This handsome cook book includes a wide variety of recipes in all categories from breads and cakes to fish and game to ice creams and pickles. It has specific sections for "Invalid Cookery" and "Breakfast Dishes," as well as "Sandwiches" and "Wines and Their Proper Usage." While there are no recipes for pork in the meat section, there is a category for shellfish and we find bacon used as an ingredient on at least one occasion, in a recipe for baked beans. With several notations throughout, and a leaf of manuscript recipes at the end.
