About This Item

London: Cassell & Co., 1948-54. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5" . None . Winston Churchill's memoirs of the Second World War, a complete first edition set in six volumes. The first edition, first impression of Winston S. Churchill's complete account of the Second World War in six volumes, each complete with its elusive, unclipped dust wrapper (only clipped to vol. III.)These volumes retrace the history of the war from its beginnings in 1919 to 1944. Written from Churchill's personal point of view, from own notes and privileged access to official documents while still working as a politician, hence some facts had to remain secret. Considered a personal memoir by a leading participant in the direction of the war rather than a comprehensive history by a detached historian. With maps and plans, and facsimiles of documents in text throughout, a number folding, some in colour. Books in the series are titled: The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; and Triumph and Tragedy. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, minor bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities. Dust wrappers unclipped and sound with shipping to extremities of spine and wraps, lightly sunned to spine. Previous ownership ink inscription to front free endpaper vol. I dated 1948. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to fore edge, affecting occasional leaf, although generally pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Dealing with war on a giant scale, THE GRAND ALLIANCE focuses on events as Britain, after fighting a desperate battle alone, was joined in the struggle against the enemy by Soviet Russia and the United Sates. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born. It was a momentous turn in the course of the war and Sir Winston Churchill noted, 'United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.'

Reviews

On Oct 16 2010, ElectricEel said:
There is no doubt that Winston Churchill was a great stylist, and if you can only read one history of World War II, you should probably read this one. On the other hand, although I don't know if there are any outright lies in this book, he does deem occasionally filter the truth to suit his political convenience.
