A nicely rebound first U.K. edition of the popular charming novel 'The Secret Garden', complete with the original colour illustrations by Charles Robinson. The first U.K. edition of this work. The novel was published in the U.S earlier the same year. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and seven colour plates, with all tissue guards present.Collated, complete.'The Secret Garden' didn't receive as much popularity as Frances Hodgson Burnett's other novels during her lifetime; however, its popularity has greatly increased since, and is now considered one of the best children's book from the twentieth century. Burnett wrote two other children's books, 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', and 'A Little Princess'. She also wrote adult novels, including 'The Shuttle', 'The Making of a Marchioness', and 'A Lady of Quality'.Complete with illustrations by Charles Robinson.Half-title is present.Six pages of adverts to the rear. Rebound in a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Spine is a little faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some odd spots. Faint tide mark to the margin of the plate facing page 300. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, has remained one of the most popular children’s books since its publication in The American Magazine in 1910. The story tells of childhood emotions and experiences while keeping the central theme - if something is cared for, it will thrive.  The Secret Garden  introduces us to a sour little girl, Mary Lennox, who is NOT a pleasure to be around. In fact, she yells like a little princess, can't make friends, and simply despises everything. She remains quite contrary until she helps her garden grow - and finds someone worse off than herself to bring along for the ride.  Burnett was a British American novelist and playwright, best known for her novels  Little Lord Fauntleroy , A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden . She regularly found inspiration through her observations of nature and the walled gardens at Maytham Hall in Kent England. The American Magazine published the first edition of The Secret Garden  in 1910
