About This Item
LONDON: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1981. First Edition. HARDCOVER. NEAR FINE IN NEAR FINE DUST JACKETS. An offering of Routledge and Kegan Paul's INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF ANTHROPOLOGY (Series Editor Adam Kuper, University of Leiden). Professor Barth is a Norwegian anthropologist educated at the Universities of Chicago and Cambridge who is perhaps best known for his methodological dictum that "everything influencing the shape of an event must be there asserting itself at the moment of the event." The first volume (243 pp. including index) in this two-volume series contains a selection from the period 1955-1972, with two additional essays written especially for this collection. The essays therein "reflect Professor Barth's particular concern with the need to acknowledge the position of the individual and with the discongruity between varying interests and varying levels of collectivity...Among topics covered...are: models of social organization; the study of social change; descent and marriage; nomad-sedentary relations in the Middle East; and ethnic groups and boundaries."The second volume (190 pp.,including index) of Professor Barth's collected essays brings together his studies and writings on the Swat Pathan society in North Pakistan which include very early ecological analysis, application of the theory of games to the Swat Pathan political system, "...an analysis of social stratification and caste, and the various processes at work in ethnic differentiation and identity in a situation of social inequality..." With exception of 3 lightly- and one moderately-bumped bottom corner(s) and some light shelfwear to dustjackets, the two volumes are near new condition.
