Japan: Kodansha, 1978 SCARCE - none in OCLC. 204pp, bound in creme cloth, with binding and hinges tight. Complete with all 236 woodcut illustrations by Un'ichi Hiratsuka, some folding, some in colour. Hiratsuka (1895-1997) was born in Matsue, Shimane in Japan, and became one of the prominent leaders of the sosaku hanga movement in 20th Century Japan. The sosaku hanga movement represented the artist as the sole creator of art, being a form of self expression, and breaking away from the traditional shin-hanga movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system of creating art. BOLDLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY UN'ICHI HIRATSUKA on the front free endpaper. INCLUDES THE SLIPCASE in Near Fine Condition, wrapped in black cloth. INCLUDES THE CARDBOARD CLAMSHELL with the paper labels, which houses the slipcase, in Very Good Condition. INCLUDES A PAPER SLEEVE containing thirteen b/w woodcut print postcards by the artist [unused]. The book covers show foxing. The interior of the book is in Fine Condition. Text is in Japanese, with the list of plates in Japanese and English.
