London: John Murray, 1860. 1st Edition, 25th Thousand . Very Good Minus. 5.25 x 7.25 inches (13.5 x 19 cm). Early printing of the first edition, with ads at rear dated January 1860. Brown blind stamped cloth binding with gilt title to spine. Page edges untrimmed. Spine has slight wear to ends, rubbing to edges, and light creasing. Slight splitting to cloth on rear joint. Bumping and slight wear to corners of boards. Brown endpapers with slight cracking to joints. Good solid binding. Browning and slight foxing to page edges. Occasional spots of foxing and a few small marks to text, mostly to margins. Corner folded to page 267/268. The original self-help book, first issued in late 1859. Hugely influential it became an immediate bestseller and by the time of Smiles' death in 1904 had sold over 250 thousand copies. A scarce very early impression, issued just a few months after the first printing. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 5.25 x 7.25 inches (13.5 x 19 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: xii, 363, 32
