About This Item
Habana: Propaganda Literaria, 1872. First Edition. Small 12mo (16cm.); publisher's orange wrappers printed within decorative border; 84pp.; steel engraved portrait frontispiece. A hint of wear and toning to wrapper extremities, else a Near Fine, superlative copy. Forms part of the author's series of short biographies of literary, artistic, and political giants, this divided into two parts, the first on the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini (pp. [5]-39) and Alexander Herzen (spelled Hertzen in this work) (pp. [41]-84), the Russian author and "father of Russian socialism." Though written by Emilio Castelar y Ripoll, elected President of the First Spanish Republic in 1873, the series was explicitly apolitical according to the prospectus provided on rear wrapper, and its subjects range from Napoleon III to Giuseppe Garibaldi, Victor Hugo to Ulysses S. Grant. All volumes in the series are institutionally scarce, OCLC locating one copy of this title as of February, 2020, in Madrid.
