About This Item

London : George Allen, 1899 A very good copy of the first edition of Sense and Sensibility with Chris Hammond illustrations, in the original decorative cloth binding. Chris Hammond was born Christiana Mary Demain Hammond and shortened her name to better compete in what was a male-dominated market for illustrators. This copy has been rebacked preserving the original spine and rebuilding the corners. The binding is clean and sound with a bright front board and a dulled spine. Light wear to edges. All page edges gilted. The original endpapers have been retained with professional repair at the joints. There is light marking around the joints at the rear endpaper. The contents are complete, sound and very clean, with light toning towards the page edges. There is some light freckling to the top part of the verso of the final page, the final blank and the recto of the rear free endpaper. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Synopsis

Sense and Sensibility is a novel by the English novelist Jane Austen. Published in 1811, it was Austen's first published novel, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances.

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
