London: Secker & Warburg, 1959. First UK Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. True First Printing of this coming-of-age novel (and the author's first book) set against the backdrop of the Second World War II. Crown 8vo (184 x 120mm) 237,[1]pp. Fine (and apparently unread) publisher's emerald green cloth, spine titled in silver; about Fine (very lightly rubbed to tip and toe of spine panel, but retaining price of 15s) example of the pictorial dust jacket designed by Robin Ray. A scarce collector's copy of this high spot of twentieth-century American literature. Based on Knowles's short story "Phineas," published in the May 1956 issue of Cosmopolitan. The dust jacket is, incontestably, the most graphically interesting of the three designs (English and American) in which the first edition has appeared. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
