New York: Macmillan, 1960. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First Printing (so stated). 8vo: [6],186pp. Publisher's grey coarsely woven cloth, spine and upper board lettered in black, in the second-issue typographic dust jacket priced $3.50. (The first issue jacket was suppressed, supposedly after the author objected that the illustration's schematic figures and flat primary colors made the book seem a children's title.) A just about Fine copy (slightly cocked) of Knowles's classic first book, square, tight and only lightly read, in a Near Fine jacket, bright and unfaded, that has had professional restoration to the spine ends, which remain slightly creased and lightly soiled. A collectible copy of this high spot of twentieth-century American literature. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

London: Hogarth Press, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Impression of these "Brilliant sketches of a society in decay" (Orwell). 8vo: 317,[1]pp. Publisher's coarsely woven oatmeal-colored cloth, spine stamped crimson with matching top-stain. Near Fine, cloth and edges dust-soiled, lettering slightly faded, but pages clean, tight and bright. According to Woolmer (451), only 3350 copies were printed. Connolly 86. A series of six loosely interconnected character sketches that unfold against the backdrop of the doomed Weimar Republic. Despite Isherwood's disclaimer, Goodbye to Berlin is firmly rooted in his biography; all the principle characters were inspired by people he had known. Isherwood originally envisioned a sweeping Tolstoyan novel combining the characters from Goodbye to Berlin and Mr. Norris Changes Trains (in fact, both novels are often packaged as The Berlin Stories and both were later adapted for stage and film, most memorably in the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
