About This Item
New York: Swords, Stanford, & Co., 1841. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. 5 5/8 x 8 7/8 inches. 24 pages. Light foxing. Otherwise pages bright and clean and free from marking, soiling and staining. Bound in original light blue wraps. Covers lightly soiled and slightly worn at the corners. Lee was the first bishop of the Diocese of Delaware and was later (1884) elected Presiding Bishop. He was an early abolitionist whose tactfully expressed views were influential upon the stance of the Church. McIlvane was, in addition to his service as bishop of the Diocese of Ohio, a noted evangelical and twice Chaplain of the United States Senate. As chaplain and professor of ethics at the United States Military Academy (1825-1827), his students included Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. At the request of President Lincoln, he travelled to England where he lobbied against British recognition of the Confederacy. A rare pamphlet.
