Poughkeepsie: Isaac Platt, 1829. Good + overall. A Poughkeepsie imprint of a sermon delivered by the American philosopher who would later become president of Union College. Hickok (1798 - 1888), taught at a private school in Bethel, Ct., graduated from Union College, and studied theology by apprenticing himself to William Andrews and Bennet Tyler, both of Connecticut. Hickok was ordained minister in 1824 at the Congregational Church in Kent, Connecticut, where he served as pastor until 1829. He then succeed Dr. Lyman Beecher at the Congregational Church in Litchfield, Connecticut. He taught at Western Reserve College, Auburn Theological Seminary, and then Union College. He succeeded Eliphalet Nott as president of Union in 1865 and then retired to Amherst Mass, where he continued to work with students & teachers of philosophy. 8vo, 9pp. Toned, chipped at edges. With linen reinforcement at spine, and in a modern acetate fronted binding.
