About This Item

(The Nigerian Field Society: December 1980). 245 x 183 mm; card wrappers; pp. 64; black-and-white photographs. Wrappers slightly curled and creased; a little scattered foxing. "Frank Bridges founded the Nigerian Field Society in 1930; The Nigerian Field was first published in 1931 under his editorship. Frank was born in 1895 in Shahpur, Punjab and entered the Navy in 1912 with the title of 'Assistant Clerk' on £45 p.a. Like many of his time he grew up on Kipling, Henty and the Boy's Own Paper and in the old-fashioned atmosphere of patriotic fervour, discipline and service which marked the hey-day of the British Empire. In 1918 he applied for service in Nigeria and indeed spent his entire working life in the service of the people of Nigeria. It is a great privilege to be able to publish this moving personal account of the life of a colonial administrator - not the memoirs of Governors - but of the man in the bush, the true backbone of the Colonial Service, which laid the foundation for modern NIgeria."
