Kansas City: Hudson-Kimberly Publishing Co., 1903. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Shelf wear, edge wear, corners worn through the cloth. Small tear at the head of the spine. Some signatures are loose and the title page is detached, but present. Clean interior, no writing. A serviceable reading copy. 244 pages with Appendices and Index. Illustrated with 17 plates including the frontispiece illustration. Includes Prefaces to the Ninth Edition, Third Edition, and First Edition (1893). A Bibliography follows the Prefaces. This book received official approval from the War Department and was adopted as a textbook at West Point and several officers' schools, and as a standard in the examination of officers for promotion. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War, with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron, Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath, the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures, allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. Oblong Folio. 241pp., with appendices, enumerating the principal ships of the Unites States Navy, their batteries and armor, and official reports of the battle of Manila in the action off Santiago De Cuba. Illustrated throughout with 43 full page chromolithographic plates with tissue guards present portraying the officers, marines and bluejackets, the type of wooden ships, the magnificent ironclads while depicting the wars of 1812, Black-Hawk and Seminole Wars, Mexican War, the later Indian Wars, War between the States, Revolutionary War and a few others. It also notes the military necessities, training and education, war employment and the organization and administration of the army and Navy. A very handsome copy bound in blue pictorial morocco lettered and decorated in gilt framing the two sides: the Army and Navy in color over beveled boards, spine lettering gilt, an unidentified owner's bookplate. A beautiful production.
