New York: Virtue, Emmins & Co.. Very Good. 1858. Engraving. 1 pages; Excellent 19th Century Hand Colored steel engraving depicting women and children of foot surrounding George Washington and his soldiers (on horseback) seeking protection. Beautifully engraved by John Rogers (1800? - 1882) after a painting by John McNevin. Image measures 6 1/2" X 4 1/4" (14" x 11" matted). Clean sharp nicely colored image, matted in white stock with clear mylar. Trained in Dublin, Ireland, John McNevin did a series of paintings of the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition, then served as a pictorial reporter for Illustrated London News during the Crimean War and eventually immigrated to New York where he was an in-house artist and illustrator for Harper's Weekly. .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years.
