About This Item

San Francisco, CA The Book Club of California, 1984. Paperback First Edition (1984), unstated. First Edition (1984), unstated. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: the very faintest foxing to the outside edge of the front panel and fainter yet to the top edge of same and a couple of faint flecks to the top edge of the test block; a number of pages toward the year of the text show the mildest bend - not quite a crease to the top corner; else only very mild rubbing and the faintest soiling; the binding is square, while remaining perfectly secure; the text is clean. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing only very minor, unobtrusive flaws. Bright and Clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (10 x 8.25 x 0.25 inches). 60 pages. Green and blue designs at the front panel and black titles at the backstrip. Language: English. Weight: 8.4 ounces. Keepsake Number 44, designed by Wesley B. Turner and printed by him and Will Powers in Berkeley. California. Paperback. The Book Club of California is a non-profit membership organization of bibliophiles based in San Francisco, operating continuously since 1912. Its mission is to support the art of fine printing related to the history and literature of California and the western states of America through research, publishing, public programs, and exhibitions. It is the largest book collector's club in the United States, with more than 800 members nationwide. The club continues to publish limited edition books, using letterpress printing and emphasizing design and craftsmanship. The club is the only association in America that has continually published fine press books since 1914. The subject matter relates to the history and culture of California and sometimes other Western areas. The book authors, often club members, include historians, scholars, professional writers, and poets. In most cases, this represents the first and only appearance of their texts in printed form. Well-known members of the club have included Ansel Adams, Merle Armitage, Faith Baldwin, Witter Bynner, Francis P. Farquhar, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, Alfred A. Knopf, Florence Lundborg, Stanley Marcus, Franklin D. Murphy, A. Edward Newton, Lawrence Clark Powell, Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, Ward Ritchie, Norton Simon, and Kevin Starr.
