This is a true first edition, first printing (first impression) with no mention of reprint to the copyright page. The title page is identical to the British edition however the American edition states 'Copyrighted in the United States' on the verso of the title page. Very light spotting to the endpages. Light chipping to page 21 and small closed tears to the edge of the next two pages none of these affect the text which is otherwise clean and tight. Original tan boards with titles to the spine. Very Uncommon copy of a early classic.

London and Boston: None, 1896. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. An early edition of M. P. Shiel's decadent collection of short stories. Along with Shiel's other short story collection 'Prince Zaleski', this early collection was influenced by Edgar Allan Poe. It was considered the most flamboyant work of the English decadent movement. Written by M. P. Shiel, a British author known for his supernatural horror and scientific romances. Lacking the catalogue to the rear of the work which identifies the first state; this is an early edition, dated the same year as the first. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; a little bumped to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Internally, binding is generally firm; front hinge is strained at the half title page. Pages are just a touch age-toned to the edges. Very Good

In light brown decorative cloth boards, spine titles gilt, red decorations and title front board and red key decoration spine and rear board along with 1896 date. Pagination error on title page, 26 pages of ads at rear. A Very Good copy. Small booksellers sticker bottom edge rear pastedown, that of J.L. McCallum, Surrey. About 1/4" of cloth loss at head of spine, not affecting title. Contents are clean, tight, and free of any foxing whatsoever. Edges of pages just starting to brown SCARCE in the true British First Edition and in quite collectible condition.. First British Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.

Some minor wear to cloth at corners and head of spine; slight bumping to corners and bottom edges of boards. Slight discoloration to spine and foxing to endpapers. Overall, a very bright copy with normal wear to externals. (Subject: Modern First.)
