About This Item
New York:: New Directions,, 1949.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Very Good plus, clipped dust jacket with chipping to the spine ends and corners. The Sheltering Sky centers on Port Moresby and his wife Kit, a married couple originally from New York who travel to the North African desert accompanied by their friend Tunner. The journey, initially an attempt by Port and Kit to resolve their marital difficulties, is quickly fraught by the travelers' ignorance of the dangers that surround them. Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
Synopsis
In this classic work of psychological terror, Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend an alien culture--and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them. The story of three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa, The Sheltering Sky is at once merciless and heartbreaking in its compassion. It etches the limits of human reason and intelligence--perhaps even the limits of human life --when they touch the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the desert. (via-GoodReads)
