London: Cassell and Company, Limited,, 1937. Presentation copy of the rare true first edition First edition, first impression. Presentation copy of the author's second novel, inscribed "For my mother, with gratitude and love, Richard Sale, Sept. 1937" on the title page. Uncommon, with only ten institutional copies traced world-wide, and especially rare on the market in this condition, the first US edition, published the following year, being much frequently encountered. In the 1940s made a successful career change from writing pulp fiction novels to Hollywood screenplays. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. With dust jacket. Upper outer corners very slightly bumped, old tape-markings to free endpapers, contents toned. An excellent copy in the dust jacket with slightly rubbed extremities, a chipped spine to no loss of lettering, and two short closed tears to the front panel, of which one with old tape-repair.
