About This Item

1785 The Shipwreck William Falconer ART Scottish Ships Nautical Poem Navigation

"With living colours give my verse to glow:

The sad memorial of a tale of woe!"

– William Falconer, The Shipwreck

William Falconer was an 18th-century Scottish poet whose poetry focused on marine life and life at sea. His most important work, 'The Shipwreck', was written in 1762 and gained him instant and immense success. The story follows the adventure on an English ship headed home, but was wrecked in Greece. Falconer created this work as an autobiographical account of him being on the ship, and his adventures along with the two other survivors.
