Description:
Aberdeen: Geo Clark and Son, 1845 An extremely scarce original copy of Edmondston's Shetland flora. Thomas Edmonston produced his first list of Shetland plants when he was 11 years old and had the good fortune to be able to discuss and share it with Joseph Hooker. He expanded the list and produced this work when he was 20 years old. It was and has remained an important work on Shetland's flora. It is in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to the front board. The binding is in very good condition. The original yellow endpapers are present and a previous owner has glued the top flap of an envelope to the fpd with their ink notes of plants and a reference to Tingwall manse. There is also a small ink '35' to the top corner of the fep. Contents: title, dedication, preface, introduction pp xxvii; arrangement of Shetland plants 1-67 with errata slip. Contents clean with extensive scholarly annotation - such as references to locations and Icelandic flora.

Description:
Tokyo: Weatherhill, 1968. With introduction by CP FitzGerald. A collection of the published words of second President of the PRC, Liu Shao-ch'i. Liu was a tragic figure in mid 20th century Communist China, a long time associate of Chairman Mao Tse-tung, who incurred the wrath of the mercurial Chairman by having the courage to speak out against Mao's policies in the Great Leap Forward, a disastrous program that resulted in the death by starvation of millions of Chinese peasants. Mao never forgave Liu's brave opposing stance and purged him in the opening months of the Cultural Revolution some eight years later, about the time of publication of this booklet. On Mao's direct command, Liu was brutally tortured for months and eventually died as a result; Mao had his body anonymously cremated and his death remained a secret until Mao himself succumbed in 1976. In the quotes captured in this book, Liu's essential humanity and intellectual honesty are evident (in marked contrast to Mao),…

The book is in excellent condition. The pages are white, of high quality, and the book smells pleasant. One page has a small easily overlooked punch-rip. Binding is good. Hardcover is green with black trim and gold embossed author and title only on the spine. The Dust Jacket is ripped and taped and has some insect damage and torn corners. What makes this second 1933 edition book especially interesting, is that it is signed, small and unpretentious, in fine black ink by the author. The book is written in Czechoslovakian. The story is a Czechoslovakian version of "Robinhood" of sorts, a blend of fact and magical fiction of the mythical or legendary Nikola Suhaj, (depending on who you believe). The story takes place in Ruthenia, mostly after, but also during the First World War. This region is forgotten, and people here are very poor and their only livelihood is the forests, where they say God lives, witches cast spells, and there are enchanted places where even the wildlife won't go. The themes of…
