About This Item
1887 ROUGH RIDERS Provenance SHOOTING Pheasant Hunting Trapping Roosevelt
"Shooting: Field and Covert" is a 19th-century authoritative guide to British shooting sports, co-authored by Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham, an English politician and naturalist, and Sir Ralph William Frankland Payne-Gallwey, an engineer and ballistics expert. The book aims to be an encyclopedic resource for both novices seeking instruction and seasoned practitioners looking to refine their skills in various forms of shooting, such as partridge, pheasant, and rabbit hunting. With contributions from the Hon. Gerald Lascelles and A.J. Stuart-Wortley, the text covers a wide range of topics, from the history of gun-making and the selection of firearms to the management of game, dog training, and addressing the challenges posed by poachers. It features over 100 engravings, including full-page plates and in-text woodcuts, by artists like Harper Pennington and G.E. Lodge. This work, part of The Badminton Library, represents a significant effort by enthusiasts and experts to compile a comprehensive guide for the English sportsman.
"Shooting: Field and Covert" is the 5th installment of the 33-volume series "The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes". This series, initiated by Longmans, Green & Co. and overseen by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort, was designed to offer comprehensive insights into major British sports and pastimes between 1885-1920.Top of Form
