About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers,, 1919. Later printing (first published in 1911), retaining the rare jacket. Originally published in 1903 as a study within the journal Translations of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the work was republished in book form following the success of Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Management, the foundation text of what would become known as Taylorism, the entirely rationalized organization of labour for the highest production. Shop Management presents the ideas more as a handbook, a practical exposition of the theories of the Principles, written "in such a way that everything in it should be intelligible to any one with a high school education" (preface). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, device to front cover in blind. With dust jacket. Folding plate, illustrations and diagrams in the text. Light cockling to cloth at head of front cover, a near-fine copy in the acceptable jacket, chipped with some loss to text, small patch of tape repair on verso, still all holding.
