London : Macmillan and Co. , 1895. Leather. Near Fine. 7.5" by 5". None. A beautiful, leather bound copy of John Richard Green's history of the English people, with multiple fold out maps. A new edition. In a full calf prize binding by Relfe Brothers, with a bookplate presented to one 'J. R. Herridge' to the front free endpaper. With a frontispiece and five maps. Collated complete. 'A Short History of the English People' was the first work by the nineteenth century historian, John Richard Green, assuring him a place in the rank of influential historical writers. This book was praised for beginning a new epoch in the writing of history, one which focuses primarily on the progress of its people. Green later went on to expand this novel into a multiple volume set. In full calf prize binding. Externally, excellent with some light shelf wear to the extremities and spine. Prize bookplate to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean with some light age-toning to the edges. The odd spot throughout. Small tear to the frontispiece tissue guard. Two small ink marks to the fore-edge. Near Fine
