The title page carries the message: "These sketches were not written for circulation in South Africa." The author was widow of the Dutch Reformed Church Moderator of the Transvaal synod. In April 1901, following the British occupation of Utrecht, she was sent with her two daughters to the Maritzburg camp. Later, she was also able to visit the camps at Volksrust, Howick, Pinetown, Merebank, Jacobs and Wentworth. The book details her experiences, and celebrates the religious spirit of the Boer women who endured so much. .
