Show Down by Margaret Escott - 1973

New Zealand: Auckland University Press, 1973. Edited and introduced by Robert Goodman, this book was first published in 1936 when it was very favourably reviewed both in London and New York, however with its reputation being so high it was decided it was very worthy of republication. The setting is Auckland and the dairying country of Waikato. The landscape, the climate, and the farming routine are strongly evoked, but it is the subtety and force with which the burgeoning and dying of a marriage are related which makes this novel memorable. Miss Escott was the first living author to be represented in the New Zealand Fiction series. the book is clean, bright and tidy and the cover is good, being slightly rubbed back corner and edge with one very tiny teat to bottom back. top edge slightly worn as is top of spine. small crease bottom front., otherwise neat. the cover shows an excellent piece of artwork by Keith Guyan based on a photograph supplied by Auckland Public Library. there are two small stains inside front cover and a pencil price has been rubbed out..
