About This Item

The Hague: Jean Neaume, 1739. Troisieme Edition . Period Mottled Calf. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hague, A La Haye, chez Jean Neaume, 1739. Troisieme Edition [third edition]. All text in French. 12mo, 307 pp. Period mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers red-stained page edges. Some peripheral wear, front pastedown with damage from removal of a bookplate, else near fine. In absolutely remarkable condition for a book in the later years of its third century. A historical romance by the feisty Mme. de Tencin - Mme. Claudine Alexandrine Guerin De Tencin. Disparaged by some during her lifetime and since, Mme de Tencin nonetheless insouciantly produced three romances, and later in life managed a...uhhh...salon...often visited by the leading thinkers in France at the time, Montesquieu, Fontenell, and Marivaux being among them. The "woman of intellect and letters but of unpleasant character" thereafter stood the test of time - most copies of this novel which survive are from an 1885 re-issue, more than 160 years after she originally penned it. The Oxford Companion of French Literature calls this title "an indifferent historical novel in which the simple narrative of Froissart is tricked out with episodes of modern gallantry." Sniff. Nonetheless, the second of the three successful and popular romances written by Tencin, an energetic, bright and assertive writer. L6
