About This Item
1876. Very good condition. A striking steel engraved portrait of the American journalist and poet, signed in full "William Cullen Bryant, May 1st, 1876" and with the first line of the poem 'A Forest Hymn': "The Groves were God's first temples", in manuscript. This is an 1824 poem, one of his early works, and considered to be one of Bryant's best.
William Cullen Bryant (1794 - 1878), recognized as the leading American poet of his day, focused on nature as a metaphor for truth. The inscription is dated 1876, two years before his death. Bryant remained famous well into his eighties; only Emerson and Longfellow rivaled him in popularity.
An oval portrait with thin lines engraved in the margin, currently framed in an acid mat. The portrait is approximately 7 x 8 1/2". The signed inscription 5 x 2 1/4". Matted and framed in a black wood frame, 11 1/2 x 16 3/4"
