New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1861. This is a Very Good copy of a later printing of the First Edition [no date match on copyright page]. Brown cloth binding with heavy decorative blindstamping on the covers; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 265 pages, with a 22-page publisher catalog in the rear. Interestingly, there is no author listed on the title page but "George Eliot" is on the spine. Contemporary (July 1861) signature on the front free endpaper. Light rubbing with mild bumps; chip to head of spine. The spine gilt is subdued but perfectly readable. A solid copy of this important work.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
Synopsis
Gentle linen weaver Silas Marner is wrongly accused of a heinous theft, and he exiles himself from the world-until he finds redemption and spiritual rebirth through his unselfish love for an abandoned child who mysteriously appears one day at his isolated cottage. Somber, yet hopeful, Eliot's realistic depiction of an irretrievable past, tempered with the magical elements of myth and fairy tale, remains timeless in its understanding of human nature and is beloved by every generation.
