About This Item
1790. Otherwise very good condition. A copper engraving of Sir Walter Raleigh and his crew with a flag on grassy terrain, two ships in the distance. Engraved for Middleton's Complete System of Geography.
Raleigh [c. 1552 - 1618] was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. A notable figure of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonisation of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I. Wikipedia.
Copper engraving, later hand color. Impression mark 11.25 x 6.75" on 18.5 x 14.25". Some browning at edges, not affecting image. Very pleasant.
