This reprint combines two volumes of the Georgia Historical Society's Collections. Written by the first Indian agent in the United States, the book is an account of Southeastern Indian affairs from 1796 to1806. The reader follows Hawkins's travels through the Indian country in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee in his dealings with the Indians. The Sketch of the Creek Country is filled with information relating to the life, manners, and customs of the Creeks, and the natural features of the country. The Letters give the history of the various tribes with whom Hawkins lived and worked and include the details of treaties, his correspondence on behalf of the Indians, details of Indian languages, and manners and customs. A map of the Creek country, produced in 1818, is included.

Despite the title proclaiming this to be issued by the Georgia Historical Society, it was actually published by W.B. Hodgson, issued at his expense as an extra to the series. Most of the text is devoted to the narrative of Hawkins, his observations and travels in 1798-99. "The author of this treatise was for more than thirty years employed by the Government of the United States in its intercourse with the Indians. He was styled by the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Cherokees, the Beloved Man of the Four Nations. He wrote eight volumes of material relating to the history of the various Indian tribes with whom he treated.
