About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Second printing. Very light wear to the book and jacket; previous owner's name to the front endpaper; flap price crossed out and a hand written one substituted. "...he moves deeper into the spiritual terrain of America--exploring what it is in us that continues to bomb in Vietnam, to sweep the Indians aside, to exploit the countryside: the shadow side of American consciousness."--from the flap. "Bly co-founded American Writers Against the Vietnam War and went on to lead much of the opposition to that war among writers. In 1968, he signed the "Writers and Editors War Tax Protest" pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the war. In his speech accepting the National Book Award for The Light Around the Body, he announced that he would be contributing the $1000 prize to draft resistance organizations....Bly became one of the most important of American protest poets during the Vietnam War; his 1970 poem "The Teeth Mother Naked At Last," later collected in his collection Sleepers Joining Hands (1973) is a major contribution to this poetry.--Wikipedia.
