About This Item

London: Faber, 1974 . First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Fine. 10.5" by 6.5". David Jones. A very scarce Limited Edition of this celebrated collection of poetic fragments from modernist David Jones, signed by the author himself. A very scarce signed Limited Edition of David Jones's final published work of poetry, no. 46 of 150 copies printed, in the publisher's original slip case.Signed by Jones to the title page shortly before his death later that year, in a noticeably fragile hand.Published months before David Jones"s death in 1974, and modestly presented by the author himself as a collection of "fragments", this work continued the exploration of themes begun in his previous poetic publications, 'In Parenthesis' and 'The Anathemata'. Set mainly in different parts of the Roman Empire, either in the Holy Land or on the Celtic fringes this work was influence by Jones' Catholic faith and by his own experiences as a soldier. An English painter and modernist poet, both T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden put Jones's poetry among the best written in their century. With a former owner's inscription to a front endpaper. In the publisher's original full cloth binding, with cloth covered slip case. Externally, exceptionally lovely, with light rubbing towards tail of back strip. Former owner's inscription to a front endpaper. Slip case in similarly excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Signed by the author to the limitation page. Pages clean and bright. Near Fine
