Description:
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher, the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it, he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems, since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous, and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for, and later ran, J. Barcham Green Ltd., which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent, England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack (John Barcham Green II) when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered…

Moscow: V. k. t-vo "Khudozhnik", 1931. Octavo (16.5 × 12.5 cm). Original decorative card wrappers; 31 pp., [23] leaves of illustrations. Private owner stamp to title and first page. Light soil to rear wrappers; two leaves with illustrations detached from staples; still about very good. Catalog of the third Soviet traveling exhibition, organized by the short-lived cooperative "Khudozhnik" (Artist) and the art section (Glaviskusstvo) of the People's Commissariat for Education (Narkompros). The exhibition aimed to capture the "ongoing process of reorientation of the visual arts to the service of the building of Socialism" by presenting over 160 works by acknowledged masters, including posters by Aleksandr Deyneka and Gustav Klutsis, paintings by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and graphic works by Mikhail Kupriianov, Alexander Osmerkin, and Vladimir Favorski, among others. Most of the works on exhibit depicted the rapid industrialization of the five-year plan, with some of the artists sent to construction sites prior to the exhibition to capture the process. Whereas the first exhibition (1929) had largely restricted itself to the Moscow Region (towns such as Riazan', Iaroslav', and Tver'), the second exhibition traveled as far as Kazan', Ufa, Sverdlovsk and other towns of the Ural region, and the third exhibition was even more broadly exhibited in order to promote the first five-year plan (1928-1932), traveling across the capitals of the republics and the provinces, from Omsk and Novosibirsk to Tashkent, Samarkand, and Minsk.
The introduction by the artist and art-critic Nikolai Maslenikov (1895-1950) discusses the ongoing splintering and infighting within the various artistic organizations of the time such as AKhR, VOPR, OST, MAKhD. A proponent of realism in art, Maslenikov was himself deeply engaged in this process, serving as the co-founder of OMKh (Society of Moscow Artists) in 1928. Along with all other remaining artistic organizations, OMKh was liquidated in 1932, and subsumed under the centralized Soviet Artists' Union. Constructivist-inspired wrappers by an unidentified artist introduce the exhibition, even as the presented works signal the birth of Socialist Realism.
As of July 2021, KVK, OCLC show three copies in North America.

Description:
A group of 15 black-and-white photographs of gaming tables produced by Mason & Co., which at one time was the nation's largest producer of gambling equipment. Several of these 8" x 10" images are stamped with a Newark, New Jersey address on the verso, dating the images to pre-1935 when the company consolidated its operations and moved them to Chicago. The company was founded in the late 1800s as Geo. Mason & Co. and initially produced ornate roulette wheels. According to a handwritten note on the back of one of the photographs, the images in this group show the new standard carved library equipment. There are a variety of mahogany tables for playing roulette and craps. One of the images in the group has been mocked up to show it in a residential setting, perhaps for a catalog. Along with the photographs, this group includes four brochures about gambling: Harrah's Club Lake Tahoe Gaming Guide, 1955; Roland Hill's In Las Vegas I Recommend: Where to Go, Stop, Eat, Play and Shop, 1950; Joe W. Brown's…
