About This Item

SOFTBACK "HISTORY OF SMUGGLING," SHIPPED FROM THE UK.* Edition: 1st. Thus.* Reprint: 2nd.* Date of Publication: 1987 (1983)* Publisher: Countryside Books.* Binding and cover condition: Mono-illustrated stiff card covers showing a sandy beach scene with horses and a cart waiting for contraband from a sailing ship in the bay. Red, black & white titles to face & red and black to somewhat faded spine. No shelf wear to edges, or to head or tail of spine. No visible marks. VG++.* Contents condition: Clean, crisp, tight & bright. No annotations, marks or inscriptions, no tanning or other visible faults to pages. Seems lightly used if at all. FINE.* Illustrations: A number of b/w photos and prints within text throughout.* Pages: 212 pp. text. x pp. Glossary, index & blank pages at rear.* Description:- Many factors combined to make the coasts of Hampshire and Dorset ideal for smuggling. The prevailing South Westerly winds enabled a fast sea passage from the big contraband warehouses less than 100 miles away across the channel. The numerous sandy beaches were safe places to land cargo, unseen by a poorly staffed and financed Revenue Service, and there were quiet, fast tracks along which to transport the goods inland to towns and cities where a sympathetic and eager market awaited them.* This is a NEAR FINE copy of the 1st thus. 2nd. reprintl, with minimal cover faults reducing it to VG++.*
