London: Sampson Low, Son, & Marston, 1865 pp.31 plus 4 blank pages at the back. Illustrated by Marcus Waterman with 5 colour plates, including tissue-guarded frontis. and with a decorative half-title in red on a grey background with a mounted central roundel of birds in the snow. Title page printed in red. Blue cloth with blind-stamped and gilt border with gilt title in centre. Light wear to head and foot of spine and rear spine edge with 5mm loss to base of spine. Front pastedown has some brown marks which appear to have been caused by removal of an owner's bookplate or a Prize presentation label which has left a rectangular ghost image on the opposite blank endpaper. Otherwise a very good clean and tightly bound copy of this scarce edition.

Gregory, 540 Broadway, NY in 1864, and in London (Low) in 1865. 12mo; 31pp; decorative lettering on blue textured cloth over beveled board; gilt-stamped double fillets with corner ornaments surrounding decorative lettering on front, blind-stamped rear board; orange glazed endpapers; faint gift inscription dated "1866" on front fly-leaf; color fp facing a color pictorial half-title; 4 color plates; light scrape to spine; near fine. (BAL 7660). Nathaniel Hawthorne's story about two siblings, a girl named Violet and a boy named Peony for his florid complexion. The children make a snow-friend on a wintry day, but their parents don't quite understand their snow creation.
