About This Item

Printed for presentation to the Roxburghe Club, Academic Press, London, first edition, 1977. Burgundy quarter morocco and burgundy cloth, folio, black skiver spine-label between bands, top edge gilt, 34 cm,. [12], 69 pp, [52] leaves of plates, 88 monochrome and 9 colour plates. Includes reproductions of all miniatures of the ms., by 3 illuminators identified as the Bedford Master, the Fastolf Master, and the Master of the Munich Golden legend. "The Polish title of a manuscript whose style is French and which now forms part of the inheritance of the British Crown invites attention to its history. The script, the painted capitals, borders and miniatures all indicate that the text was copied in Paris about 1420-1425 and that the miniatures were begun in the workshop of the illuminator whom we now call the Master of the Duke of Bedford, briefly, the Bedford Master. But for whom was it executed? The fact that the text is for the use of Paris tells us little; it may simply mean that the first owner preferred this form for her personal prayerbook. " - from the introduction. Printed at the Rampant Lions Press. Contents: Preface; Author's Note; The History of the Manuscript; The Texts; The Miniatures : The Calendar, The Gospel Sequences and Two Prayers, The Hours of the Virgin, The Seven Penitential Psalms, The Hours of the Holy Cross, The Hours of the Holy Spirit, The Fifteen Joys of the Virgin, The Seven Requests of Our Lord, The Vespers of the Dead, The Life of St Margaret, The Hours of the Passion, The Suffrages of the Saints; The Three Illuminators; Codicology; Bibliography; Notes; The Plates.
