After two years in San Francisco, author McAllister (1827-1895) traveled to New York where he found success in mingling with the moneyed classes. His wealthy friends did not appreciate their public exposure in this book, the writing of which cost McAllister his status, and he died while dining alone at the Union Club in 1895.
