About This Item

UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Qrto,288pp includes index, profusely illustrated with b/w+colour photographs and illus. Soldiers, the major BBC series on the history of warfare, tells its story through the different types of soldiers who have fought each other since warfare began. The book is both a companion to the series, and a major history of men in battle in its own right. Recounts the rise of warfare from its origins as a clash between foot soldiers armed with primitive edged weapons,to its present state of sophisticated confrontation between automated electronic systems.Their examination of the history of the foot soldier is followed by an account of the cavalry revolution, which made the horseman the master of the battlefield over much of the world from 1000BC until the end of the Middle Ages. The horseman's dominance ended by the invention of gunpowder, which revived the power of the foot soldier, but also brought artillery to the fore. The great guns of 16thC warfare toppled the castles from which mounted warriors had exercised their power throughout the Middle Ages. But the rise of artillery drove the military engineers to revise their art.During the 16th+17thC,fortification achieved a complexity which made states and cities impossible to overcome except by detailed and expensive logistical organization. The power of fortification perhaps reached its apogee during WW1,when combatant states sheltered from each other behind trench systems running the length of their frontiers.Eventually broken by the invention of the tank, which in WW2 was to make a military revolution as dynamic as that imposed by cavalry 3,000 years earlier. Its power was to be enhanced by military aircraft. The rise of military airpower greatly increased the exposure of the civilian to the experience of war.The civilian also finds his place in the ranks as an irregular soldier, whose role has been enhanced in this century by the politicization of warfare for revolutionary ends. How such soldiers - and their regular confederates are motivated to combat is the subject of author's treatment of fighting spirit. Ultimately they show that such motivation is the responsibility of the commander, whose selection, training and character,is perhaps the nub of the subject to which this book is dedicated.
