About This Item
Boston, Massachusetts: The Roberts Brothers, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 24mo 5" - 6" tall. Fine publisher's vignette to title page augment this cute little tome published by the inimitable Roberts Brothers in First Edition state, they having published the so-called "No-Name" or "Anonymous" series that favored women authors who wouldn't otherwise be published. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, bound in teal cloth over boards, moderately rubbed and with scuffed tips, but complete and sturdy, and gilt lettering to covers and spine and gilt illustration. Red-stained all around. Lightly toned throughout, gift inscription from Anna L. to Cousin Anna, August 22, 1888. The author Helen Jackson (Maria Fiske) was born in 1830 and lived 55 years, reared in her native Amherst, Massachusetts, and was born in the same year as her dear friend Emily Dickinson, who became the model for her anonymously penned novel Mercy Philbrick's Choice's heroine. She married E.B. Hunt in 1852 and then began to write under the name "H.H." Once widowed, she later remarried, to Will S. Jackson of Colorado, in 1875. She is most famous for Ramona, about the plight of Native Americans, and was also the author of "Versus", "Ramona" and "Bits of Travel". Sonnets and ballads, fine light verse. 135 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
