Including chapters on the history (English history, Dutch history, and more), the Cape Colony, and Natal. Written by Anthony Trollope, who toured the largely untamed region of South Africa in 1877. His vivid descriptions of the landscape, architecture, native peoples, and sights and sounds of late nineteenth-century South Africa gives a fascinating perspective on this rich region.The first edition of this work with the half titles. Complete in two volumes.Including a folding map of South Africa, collated and complete. Containing the bookplate of Arthur Trobyn Jones to the front pastedown of each volume. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Splitting to the cloth to the joint, particularly to the rear joint of Volume II. Cloth on the spine of Volume II lifting at the head. A small amount of loss to the cloth at the tails of the spines. Fading to the spines. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, front hinge is strained to each volume. A few spots to the pages, particularly to the folding map, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Good
