"The Southern Literary Journal is the least known and least praised among Southern antebellum literary magazines... The Southern Literary Journal...was quite willing to be part of a `debating ground' for stating the South's positions. It lasted only slightly more than three years, from September 1835 to December 1838"-Chielens, ed. American Literary Magazines, pp. 385-90. These issues include essays on medical jurisprudence, Italian poets of the eighteenth century, and a review of Harriet Martineau's Miscellanies, among many other items.
