[40 leaves (unnumbered).], including 17 colour photo printed plates, 17 explanatory leaves on tissue, 4 leaves of music & title, and w/ self-printed colour-illustrated lithograph softcovers, punch sewn at spine w/ red silk ribbon (minor dustsoiling, edgewear), still VG; Folio. 6 x 16.5 in., printed in black, w/ illust. ad for the national Silk Co. petticoats, center fold as issued (minor toning, small crease to lower corner), still VG. First edition of this printed souvenir album which was one of the many cross-marketing pieces published by Klaw & Erlanger promoting the original blockbuster of the Progressive Era in America. Considered to be one of the most spectacular and successful Broadway productions ever mounted, whose run from 1899 to 1900 would be witnessed by over 10 million people, generating millions in profits, and featured over a dozen freight cars to carry all the equipment and cast. Young had adapted the wildly popular historical novel by Wallace which relates the story of Ben-Hur, and how his life intersects the pageantry of Rome from 7BC - 38 A.D., and the life of Christ, and the chariot race was an ingenious production in the play. Many different actors played the part of Ben-Hur over the two decade run, and this Detroit Opera House production featured Richard Buhler who began his run as Ben-Hur by 1912. See: Jon Solomon, Ben-Hur: the Original Blockbuster (2016).
