Portland, Maine.: L. H. Nelson Company. No date. Ca. 1900.. Souvenir picture booklet with paper wraps, 9 3/4 x 8 inches, 32 pp. First page states "Published Exclusively for Panton & White Company" (a large Duluth Department Store that is pictured in the booklet). Free-end front-cover corners have dog-ear folds; small tears along top free edge of front cover repaired on verso with archival tape, very small v-shape tear to first page and verso view of Superior Street. Small spot in margin of first two view pages; other pages clean and bright. An uncommon souvenir item that makes Duluth appear prosperous and progressive. It's economic decline began in the 1950s when the high-grade ore mined in the vicinity gave out; the city is sometimes recognised as "Where the Rust Belt Began." Views in the album (none of which picture an automobile) include Superior Street looking East; Duluth Harbor and types of freight and passenger steamers; the Duluth Missabe Northern Ore Docks; the Wholesale District; Lyceum Theatre and Office Building; F.A.Patrick & Company Wholesale Dry Goods Building; the Spalding Hotel; the St.Louis Hotel and Torrey Building; the Reading Room of the Commercial Club and Interior of American Exchange Bank; the Duluth Public Library; Duluth Central High School Building; Representative Duluth Residences; Munger Terrace (modern apartment houses overlooking the harbor) and Chester Terrace (attached homes heated from one plant); the Duluth Boat Club and Northland Golf and Country Club; Duluth West End As Seen From the Boulevard; and much more. Overall condition is fair-plus, so far as front cover is concerned; contents, however, in good condition with issues noted. An uncommon publication. .
