London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. A rare, 18th century Japanese woodblock print of "Collection of Strange Stories: Journey to the East" written by Tachibana Nankei, a doctor and author in the late Edo period. "Journey to the East" is a travelogue that tells of strange stories, rare things, scenic spots, historic sites, people, and more in various places the author traveled to for medical training specifically Togoku (the area east of Kyoto).

This rare 1795, record is written in a column woodblock print format with furigana for easier reading with illustrations of samurai, scenery, commoners, nature, and more!

1687 Travels of Chardin in PERSIA Middle East Iraq Turkey Iran Voyages French

A rare French edition of Jean Chardin's "Travels into Persia and the East Indies". This book is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East. This printing was published at the same time as other French edition, all are considered first editions. In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home.

Upon his return, he was considered quite a celebrity in London; though, according to Evelyn he was 'not inclined to talke wonders". He met with famous members of the Royal Society, all of whom took great interest in his voyage. He told them of his witnessing of Abbas II's coronation, and the jewels and fine ornaments he had seen.
