About This Item

Scarce German-language Ukrainian edition of the most famous work by German writer and journalist Klaus Neukrantz (1897-ca. 1941). The book contained graphic depictions of "Blutmai", the repression of illegal workers' demonstrations organized by the German KPD in 1929. It was immediately confiscated after publication. The present edition was apparently published by the Ukrainian version of the all-Soviet Central Publishing House of the Peoples of the USSR, known as Ukrderzhnatsmenvydav. It was active in the 1930s, apparently following the closure of the Tsentrizdat publishing house, which was active from 1924 to 1931. Ukrderzhnatsmenvydav was based in Kharkiv and Mariupol, and later in Kyiv.

Striking constructivist-inspired wrappers by Georgii Ivanovich Fisher (1906-1978), with his monogram to lower left corner. Little is known about the artist, who also designed five Yiddish editions of works by Leib Kvitko published in Kharkiv.

As of December 2023, KVK, OCLC only show the copies at Harvard and the German National Library in Leipzig.
